Handcrafted. Locally sourced. A little bit of luxury. A great way to treat someone. I first came across Harper and Lulu on Instagram. Their hampers always look delicious and they’re beautifully packaged and presented.
I first met Laura, the founder and creator, over coffee at Portafilter. Vibrant. Energetic. Fun. Her zest for life leaves you feeling inspired. We have crossed paths many times since then but I only recently discovered that she is a local based in Mayfield! Music to my ears.
Here is a bit more about Laura and her beautiful hamper business.
Harper and Lulu is a boutique Newcastle based company that creates local, quality and affordable gift hampers, which leave a lasting impression. As proud advocates for the Hunter, our hampers are comprised of an assortment of carefully selected and locally sourced gifts and are a great way to show appreciation for any occasion.
We work with our clients to put together custom-made hampers according to their budget and individual taste.
Our range is continually growing and we are always on the lookout for new suppliers to keep evolving, supporting new businesses and offering our clients something fresh and exciting.
Along with our Hampers, we also stock soy wax candles, reed diffusers and Tasmanian Oak chopping boards.
What was the ‘light bulb’ moment that inspired you to start your business?
I was inspired to start Harper and Lulu after having my first child. Since I started working from a young age and working in a business, I strived to learn more about running a business and I wanted to challenge myself to grow. I grew up in New Zealand in a family with parents who ran their own business. I knew that I wanted to have the same work life balance they did so as a family we could enjoy time together and create some amazing memories. Harper and Lulu was launched in 2014 as a small soy candle making company and quickly expanded to include a range of gift hampers.
Your products and hampers are amazing. A lot of them are locally sourced. Can you tell us a bit about them and where they are from?
All of our hampers are sourced locally. The produce and products come from amazing artisan producers including; Pork Ewe Deli, Sprocket Roasters, Lewis Estate Wines, Urban Hum, Cocoa Nib, Adina Vineyard, Upper Hunter Smokehouse, Murray’s Brewery, My Mini Designs, Billie’s Kid, Made to Milk, My L’il Bestie and Macadamia’s from Ducks Creek. We are so lucky that the Hunter Valley is full of amazing high- quality products. We love supporting local companies which is why we pull together their products and deliver them to people’s doors as a Harper and Lulu Hamper.
How do you go about designing your hampers?
Our hampers have been designed based on the needs of our clients and of course our family and friends’ feedback and suggestions. I love when our clients customise the hampers they give out. It shows they really care about who they are giving them to because they take the time to get to know the person. We have a few hamper ideas in the pipeline so keep an eye out for updates.
On a busy day what keeps you going: music, lots of coffee/tea etc?
Every day is jam packed from start to finish. Thank goodness for Sprocket Roasters to help get me through the day with their coffee and hot chocolate. I love listening to music when we pack up the hampers ready for shipping. My day wouldn’t be complete without some chocolate from Cocoa Nib and of course dancing with my 3.5 year old and cuddling Molly who is our latest edition to the family.
Strangest thing in your handbag at the moment?
My handbag is a Tardis so depending on what time of the day it is will depend on what goes inside. Thankfully it is big enough for everything. Recently it’s been used for hamper deliveries, client meetings and a nappy bag filled with snacks for a toddler and a baby.
In your spare time: Gardening, music, reading, mountain climbing, Netflix or something else?
Spare time is a luxury which I enjoy. I love to work out with my gym buddy to get the endorphins pumping. Hitting the gym helps me create clarity and gives me a great sense of accomplishment. I love getting outdoors for a walk, riding my paddleboard and also chilling out with my hubby and checking out local restaurants for lunch. If I have a bit of time, I binge on Netflix. I’ve just finished my latest show so I’m in need of something new to watch.
